Reformation Sunday
Reformation Day is a day when we recognize and celebrate the Protestant Reformation. It’s typically celebrated on October 31 because that’s the day when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses on the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, Germany, way back in 1517. Reformation Sunday, then, is celebrated on the last Sunday in October each year.
Even though Luther himself didn’t agree with separating from the Catholic church, it was his act that sparked the uproar which eventually resulted in the Reformation and development of many protestant forms of Christianity. Luther’s goal was to educate worshippers, to get them to think about how many Catholic practices were unbiblical, such as salvation by works and the selling of indulgences.
On Reformation Sunday, we have the opportunity to repent of the sins of the past and to celebrate the truth that sets us free in Jesus.
